A Rainy Year Can Ruin Your Basement

2018 was a wet year for Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania. The Farmer’s Almanac says it will rain this winter, and that means more wet basements.

According to the National Weather Service, 2018 was officially Pittsburgh’s 4th wettest year on record. A KDKA report, listed 48.62 inches of rain last year (over 10.3 inches above average), with 3.73 inches falling on one day, making September 9th, 2018 the second wettest day on record.

Inches alone don’t tell the story. Remember the collapse of Route 30 in East Liberty last spring? it was just one of many throughout the area, with PennDOT estimating over $50 million in landslide damages for 2018.

Is 2019 going to be better? According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac (which has been in the forecasting business since 1792), winter temperatures will be well above normal and precipitation will be a bit above normal across Pennsylvania.

Pittsburgh isn’t taking chances, with the city increasing its hillside management budget after dealing with more than 2 dozen slides in 2018.

All that water has to go somewhere, and eventually, it’s going to find your basement. When it does, it will ruin your stuff, cause mold, and possibly result in real structural damage.
